Not sure what your "suspicions" were, but indeed I rewrote my original conclusion to the article during the editing process. Self-imposed public responsibility I suppose, in case some readers out there might take the kamikaze scenario too literally.

In any case you are right. Modern society in many countries has in fact inflicted that sense of helplessness in chasing the better life dream that our parents had embraced. It's not unique to China.
